Anthony Martial, on loan at MANCHESTER UNITED, endured another nightmarish night at Sevilla as he was bizarrely booked before being replaced through injury.

The 26-year-old Frenchman, who joined the LaLiga side on a six-month contract in January, was brought down by Eduardo Camavinga in the 40th minute of Sevilla’s decisive game against Real Madrid on Sunday night.

Camavinga had already received a warning nine minutes earlier and many believed he could have received a second yellow for the challenge.

Yet, instead of sending the Madrid man away, referee Guillermo Cuadra opted to book Martial instead after complaining that Camavinga was allowed to stay on the pitch.

Things then went from bad to worse for Martial who failed to recover from the tackle and had to be replaced by Rafa Mir four minutes before the break.

And to make matters worse, Sevilla repelled a 2-0 half-time lead as they were down 3-2 after an 82nd-minute equalizer from Nacho before a stoppage-time winner from Karim Benzema.

The night’s events characterized Martial’s struggles at Sevilla – with loanee United managing just one goal and one assist in 11 appearances for the Spanish side.

He is expected to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season although he also failed to feature for the Red Devils in the first half of the 2021-22 campaign.

Speaking earlier this month on his spell at Sevilla, Martial said: “I was able to enjoy football again after a long time without playing.

“I know I can be at a higher level, and I’m working for that, but first the injury, then adapting to a new club and a new city, is difficult for me because of the language barrier. .

“I see it as very complicated to be able to continue in Sevilla.

“I’m not worried at the moment. I came knowing it would be six months and then I would surely have to go back to Manchester United.”

Sevilla are third in the La Liga table, 15 points behind Real Madrid, as Carlo Ancelotti’s men edge closer to the title.

And Julen Lopetegui’s side must now fight to secure a top-four spot as they sit just three points clear of fifth-placed Real Betis with six games to play.
